The basic plot of this delightful children’s book is that forest animals, awakened by the birds’ warning that there is a stranger in the woods, set out to discover if there is danger and find, instead, a wonderful surprise. (In the same way you will find a surprise with the way this 10th Anniversary Edition cover presents itself! It doesn’t come across in the photo but it is delightful the way the image dances on the cover of the book.)

Alan Whitehead, in his famed Golden Beetle Book Curriculum series says, “we must be careful in our story-telling that we use, not anthropomorphism (like Mickey Mouse), but anthropopsychism! Here the animals communicate in a human way but behave as animals. Remember, Steiner’s words ‘…how animals live together in real life.’. Animals in real life don’t wear trousers!”
