Watercolor Foundations: Part One

This video, exclusive to Earthschooling, was created by Waldorf teacher Rick Tan and takes you through all the foundations in wet-on-wet watercolor painting. This is the first video in our three-part “Watercolor Foundations” series but is also a stand-alone tutorial.

The video, Waldorf Wet-on-Wet Watercolor Foundations: Part One shows the teacher how to work with one color, how to work with two colors that do not combine and how to work with many colors than combine together. Using the techniques in the video and the two accompanying documents (one guide and one supplement by Rick Tan) you can create more than 23 lessons to use as you introduce wet-on-wet watercolor painting to your classes.

These techniques are suitable for a teacher who needs to learn wet-on-wet watercolor painting (we recommend you start with part one and work your way through all the foundation videos), or to teach students who are in kindergarten, first or second grade. These lessons are also suitable for a student of any age if they are being introduced to wet-on-wet watercolor for the first time.

Watercolor Foundations: Part Two

This video, exclusive to Earthschooling, was created by Waldorf teacher Rick Tan and takes you through all the foundations in wet-on-wet watercolor painting. This is the second video in our three-part “Watercolor Foundations” series but is also a stand-alone tutorial.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be preparing for watercolor lessons with your student(s) while also relaxing, meditating and doing your own inner work? This is what the Rick Tan’s landscape watercolor video will do for the teacher/parent.

You will be amazed when you see what Rick Tan teaches you to do with just the color blue. You will then advance from one-color landscapes to multi-color landscapes and scenes. After watching the tutorial you will be able to become “friends with water” and be able to create amazing landscapes with your student(s).

The techniques are not all you will learn. Watching him create the paintings from beginning to end is so much better than someone telling you theory or showing you a picture. With each stroke of the brush you watch you are learning more.

“Wet on wet watercolor is a way of seeing yourself and this can be a powerful tool for change” – Rick Tan

The video, Waldorf Wet-on-Wet Watercolor Foundations: Part Two shows the teacher how to create forms and content by painting scenes from nature. You will explore the sky, sea, land and foliage. You will no longer be painting free form or random shapes. This video tutorial advances you and your students to reproducing actual scenes from nature or creating your own nature scenes from your imagination.

These techniques are suitable for a teacher who needs to learn wet-on-wet watercolor painting (If you are a beginner with wet-on-wet watercolor painting you may want to watch Wet-on-Wet Watercolor Foundations: Part One where we explored character and color.), or to teach students who are in first through 9th grade.

Watercolor Foundations: Part Three

This video, exclusive to Earthschooling, was created by Waldorf teacher Rick Tan and takes you through all the foundations in wet-on-wet watercolor painting. This is the third video in our three-part “Watercolor Foundations” series but is also a stand-alone tutorial.

In this video tutorial we will continue to build on what we learned in parts one or two (or the foundations you already have in wet-on-wet watercolor techniques – part one and two are not required before you use this video as long as you already have a basic foundation in watercolor). The past techniques we learned included lifting off, painting in, use of different widths and edges of the brush, modulation of pigments from rich to diluted, and the use of perspective with a background, middle ground and foreground.

These techniques are demonstrated again as you watch the video and learn to create three different kinds of paintings – an ‘animal/underwater’ scene, an ‘historic landscape’ scene, and a ‘landscape with person’ painting. However, during this episode the speaking focus is on the five basics of wet-on-wet watercolor painting: control, content, color, character, and communion. Landscape is no longer the main subject but the frame for our main subject.

The video, Waldorf Wet-on-Wet Watercolor Foundations: Part Three introduces three amazing paintings to the teacher/student including “Underwater Turtles”, “Stonehenge on the Hill” and “Horseman on the Mountain by the River”. The techniques you learn creating these paintings can be used to create hundreds of additional paintings for different lessons in your classroom.

How and where you use these painting lessons is only limited by your imagination. We provide you with many ideas for students in first grade through high school.

“Through the idea that the medium of wet-on-wet watercolor is a communion – a synergistic relationship between us and our world – we develop a sense of purpose. We engage with the world and see the beauty and wonder that is there. We strive to do good in the world with pure and loving intent” – Rick Tan

Finding Your Inner Voice

15-Part Video Series from Michelle Merinelli Prindle & Dan Prindle

This inspiring 15-part video series provides parents and teachers with all the essentials they need to sing, teach their students to sing, and build relationships, community, confidence, intelligence, skill and health through song. This series covers the following topics in a clear & engaging manner that anyone can learn from. This series is perfect if you think you “can’t sing” (you will be singing like a lark after finishing the series). This series is also the perfect foundation for any classroom or home – even if you are a skilled vocalist.

Working through the lessons below and sharing them with your student(s) can provide weeks of enriching musical education for your home or classroom. Watching this series I was amazed that such a professional class was available at such a low cost. The exercises and lessons you gain from this course will be ones you use for years to come.

This is a foundation investment in your classroom or home education environment that you will want to get started with as soon as possible. This is one of those things that you will experience and then say to yourself, “Why didn’t I do this years ago?”

Or, if you are like me, you will be saying, “Where were you all my life Michelle and Dan Prindle?”

  1. Introduction
  2. 10 Reasons to Sing
  3. Misconceptions About the Voice
  4. The Voice as an Instrument
  5. Posture (with exercises)
  6. Breath Work (with exercises)
  7. Pitch Matching
  8. Registers
  9. Chest Voice
  10. Head Voice
  11. Exercises 1
  12. Exercises 2
  13. Exercises 3
  14. Songs
  15. Vocal Hygiene

Michelle Prindle says:

Singing is the single most important musical experience a child can have.  It lays the foundation for all future musicality in life.  In many years of teaching private music lessons and classes, I have seen that all children can learn to make music.  Yet it is children who grew up in a singing home, who love to sing, that truly have a grasp for the inner nature of music and possess that musicality in their own music making.

Just think of all that is at play when one sings – strong breath support, carefully attuned listening, recognition of patterns, replicating what one hears with the instrument of one’s own body.  It is truly remarkable all that a child learns from singing.

From a child’s very first days of life, communication with her primary caregivers is of a musical nature.  “Motherese” is the term given to the sing-songy, lyrical way in which a mother communicates with her infant.  Yet even this seemingly simplistic gesture is imbued with creative purpose.

The child learns to decipher pitch, phonemes (the individual units of speech), and the cadence of her mother tongue.  Lullabies are sung to children across the globe, and help to tune the child in to the musical impulses of her own culture.  Children learn rhythm through the musicality of the nursery rhyme and lullaby traditions unique to their own mother language.  In this way, song brings children their first sense of language and communication.  Singing also stimulates emotional and mental development, placing children on a path toward a fullness of spirit and intellect.

And singing does so much more: it promotes language development, lightens the load of work, supports creative play, eases transitions in the day, and is a wonderful first step toward learning to play an instrument.  It is truly difficult to overstate the importance of, but also the joy, of singing with children.

Storytelling in the Upper Grades

Storytelling is an integral part of any Waldorf-inspired curriculum. In the early childhood classroom children experience the magic of stories told with small toys and play silks and enter a world of imagination. As children enter the grades they enter the world of storytelling as an adventure and inspiration through acting out stories with the teacher, dressing up and listening to fairytales, fables and more. In this video Robyn Wolfe shows you how to keep that magic alive when telling stories to children in 5th grade and up. In her demonstration she tells a story from the sixth grade Roman History block illustrating many techniques the teacher can use along the way including introduction of vocabulary, chalk drawing, facial expressions, story selection, hand gestures, voice and much more. Hone your skills as an expert storyteller with this wonderful tutorial. See a short sample below…

Waldorf Rhythms and Stages: From Preschool to Grade Eight

Included: Video, MP3 and PDF

Waldorf is a form of education that works with the rhythms of the child, the day, the week, the month and the year. It works with the spiritual, emotional and physical rhythms of the body. It works with the rhythm of the earth – natural foods, toys and other materials are used in Waldorf education. The rhythm of the child is the first thing we consider. What are they ready for and when are they ready for it? This E-book will help guide you through all of those stages by providing the philosophy and theme behind each stage as well as a list of specific lessons they need at each stage.

This E-book and video set will also guide you through the rhythms of the day, week, month and year. As we teach our children according to their natural rhythms this will: 1.Foster connection, interdependence, compassion, respect, teamwork and community awareness: 2.Will create natural opportunities for conflict resolution as there will be fewer conflicts: 3.Will help the child connect with their natural rhythms in nature and spirit: 4.Will free their minds to be more creative and will encourage creativity when they most need to be encouraged: 5.Will help you create a rhythm for your family that is “just right” – not too busy and not too slow. It will help you connect with the rhythms of nature, the day, the week, the months and the year. This E-book and video set is free with a Family/Lifetime Curriculum Package or Teacher Training Package.

Or, if you are like me, you will be saying, “Where were you all my life Michelle and Dan Prindle?”
