BLOCK CONTENT
The Revolutionary War and geometry share a foundational connection in surveying, artillery ballistics, and military engineering. Both fields rely on precision mapping, angles, and spatial reasoning to secure and defend territory. General George Washington relied heavily on geometry to map the battlefield. Surveying tools of the era—such as the theodolite and surveyor’s chain—used triangulation to measure distances and plot troop movements. Gunners used geometric angles of elevation and wind trajectory to accurately aim cannons. Understanding parabolic curves and angles was vital for calculating shell trajectories and destroying enemy fortifications.
The construction of defensive redoubts, trenches, and star forts required precise geometric design. Leaders like the French military engineer, the Marquis de Lafayette, used geometric principles to lay out angles that maximized defensive crossfire.
