Description
Stories of animal fables and legends help second graders process the complex, dual nature of humanity. Instead of being told what to think, children are allowed to experience the stories and naturally discover the moral or lesson themselves.
In second grade, students learn the lower case alphabet. Letters are introduced through simple stories and are practiced rhythmically through form drawing and movement. The teacher introduces a few lowercase letters at a time, often connecting them to a new sound and continuing the narrative storytelling traditions used for capitals. Before putting pencil to paper, students use their whole bodies, arms, or fingers to trace the curves and lines of the letters in the air or walk them on the floor to develop muscle memory. Students practice writing the letters by transferring them into their large, handmade Main Lesson Books using block and stick crayons.
Lowercase letters are also taught in grouped word families (e.g., “an,” “at”) to establish phonetic relationships rather than in alphabetical order.
