Description
Sixth-grade Waldorf physics introduces students to the foundational laws of the natural world through a hands-on, phenomena-based approach. Moving away from direct biological observations, students begin studying invisible forces such as acoustics, optics, thermodynamics, magnetism, and static electricity through classroom demonstrations.
Unlike conventional science, which starts with textbook theories, the Waldorf method engages students’ developing analytical minds by encouraging them to become true observers of the physical world. The lessons are carefully structured to unfold in stages:
Core Areas of Study
- Acoustics: Students explore how sound is produced (striking, strumming, blowing) and study pitch, volume, frequency, and resonance using instruments such as tuning forks.
- Optics & Light: Lessons focus on the behavior of light, the nature of shadows, and the perception of color. Students observe how light interacts with darkness and create colored shadows.
- Thermodynamics: The study of heat includes understanding how warmth is generated, how temperature affects materials, and how heat travels through conduction, convection, and radiation.
- Magnetism & Static Electricity: Students witness the invisible forces of attraction and repulsion, learning about magnetic fields and the basics of static charge.
CONTENT
During this block, we will learn about the physics of acoustics, optics, magnetism, and thermodynamics, taking breaks now and then to practice math concepts we have learned over the years through math games and puzzles. And since mathematics and geometry are the structural language of physics, the student will also be introduced to geometrical formulas this month. Geometric formulas describe the shape and dimensions of space, while physical formulas use these spatial relationships to describe how matter and energy behave within that space.
