Description
Core Themes and Progression
The curriculum traces the trajectory of Roman civilization through four key phases:
- Mythological Foundations: The epic tales of Aeneas fleeing Troy, followed by the legendary founding of the city by Romulus and Remus.
- The Roman Republic: Stories of civic virtue, the rule of law, and the strength of the ordinary citizen. Students learn about the early written laws and figures like Horatius guarding the bridge.
- The Empire and the Caesars: The shift in power through figures like Julius Caesar and Augustus, contrasting the triumphs of engineering with the excesses and depravity of later emperors like Nero.
- Decline and the Rise of Christianity: The eventual fall of the empire, which serves as a transition into the upcoming Middle Ages block.
Activities and Pedagogy
The block relies on vivid biographical storytelling rather than dry facts, capturing the imaginations of middle schoolers. Students engage deeply with the material through several practical methods:
- Main Lesson Books: Students write independent compositions and illustrate vivid chalk-drawn maps of the Mediterranean, the city of Rome, and expanding empires.
- Engineering and Construction: Hands-on projects building models.
- Cultural Immersion: Exploring Roman daily life and sometimes even cooking and wearing togas.
- Language Arts: An introduction to Latin through the roots of modern language.
CONTENT
Ancient Rome developed a highly sophisticated banking system that utilized private brokers (argentarii), state-run public banks (mensarii), and secured temple deposits. The Romans pioneered financial tools such as promissory notes, letters of credit, and the permutatio, which allowed them to transfer funds across provinces without physically transporting heavy coins. This block is a great way to explore both Roman history and business math together.
