Description
Core Curriculum Themes
- Archetypes of Earth Formation: The block usually begins by examining a deep polarity—the “fire rock” (igneous, such as granite) and the “water rock” (sedimentary, such as limestone).
- The Mineral Kingdom: Students investigate the mineral components that make up rocks, such as quartz, feldspar, and mica.
- The Rock Cycle: Students learn how rocks form, break down, and are recycled by heat, pressure, and erosion.
- Historical Geology: Lessons touch on the stories of Earth scientists as well as dramatic historical events such as the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Classroom Activities & Art
- Main Lesson Books: Students create detailed, multi-page journal entries in their Main Lesson Books, using rich, colorful chalk pastels to draw rock cross-sections, volcanoes, and crystal clusters.
- Hands-On Modeling: Clay modeling is frequently used to help students visualize Earth’s inner layers and the formation of crystalline structures.
- Outdoor Exploration: The block is frequently paired with nature walks or camping trips. Students are encouraged to collect rock samples, observe geological strata in local outcroppings, or even visit caves to witness slow geological time firsthand.
CONTENT
Ancient South American cultures were deeply shaped by the continent’s dramatic geology. The towering Andes Mountains and the nutrient-rich Amazon Basin provided unique resources that civilizations utilized. Ancient peoples also developed remarkable engineering skills to adapt to extreme environments. For this reason, our studies in geology and mineralogy pair perfectly with our exploration of South American cultures.
