Lesson One: Math: Measurements: History of Measurements

Hello Earth Schoolers! In this lesson, Teacher Amy will explain how measurements were used throughout history. We’ll look at more common units of measurement, like inches, feet, and yards, and we’ll also learn about units we may not have heard of before, like hands, spans, paces, and cubits. Teacher Amy will take us back to ancient times and show us how these measuring methods came to be and how people used them before things became more standardized and consistent. Next, we will get out our main lesson books and draw the human body so we can label some of the different measurements we learned about.

Lesson Two: Math: Measurements: Bird House Measurements
Teacher: Amy Williams

In this lesson, Teacher Amy shows us how to plan and prepare to build a birdhouse using real, accurate measurements. We’ll start with an image of the birdhouse we want to build and a wooden board, then consider how to cut the board into the pieces we need. We will practice using a ruler or yardstick to draw out our board, then get creative and figure out how to make the pieces. This activity is meant to challenge our minds and help us conceptualize how to find the smaller pieces within the larger one. At the very end of the video, the accurate measurements are shown.

Lesson Three: Math: Measurements: House Building: Bat House

In this lesson, Teacher Amy shows us how to take a board and cut it into the right shapes to assemble a bat house. Like previous lessons, we’ll start by drawing our board in our main lesson books, then we’ll look at how to cut each piece to the correct size. This time, we’ll focus on accurate measurements and dimensions. To fully assemble your bat house, you will need the following: an old piece of lumber, a handsaw, a hammer, spiral nails, and a drill.

Lesson Four: Math: Measurements: Create Your Own Measurements
Teacher: Amy Williams

In this lesson, we will create our own measurements using methods similar to those used in history. Teacher Amy will show us how to figure out our base measurement, and then we will go around our homes and measure various things. Depending on how big or small your base measurement is, you might get a bigger number when you measure items. Teacher Amy demonstrates different ways we can use our unit of measurement and how we can use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to measure larger items faster. We’ll end this lesson with a colored pencil drawing of our base unit of measurement and a list of everything we measured.

Lesson Five: Math: Measurements: Lesson E: Math: Geometry – Feeling Circles

Today, we’ll be learning about geometry and circles. To start, Teacher Amy will guide us through a physical movement activity to connect the concepts in our minds to our bodies. After this, we’ll practice drawing circles using a few different techniques, and we will also experiment with creating patterns and mixing primary colors.

Lesson Six: Math: Measurements: Lesson F: Math: Grids – Volume and Space

In this lesson, we’ll be discussing squares and square roots with Teacher Amy and Assistant Mabel. Teacher Amy shows us how to square numbers using a large-scale grid. Next, we will practice drawing this grid in our main lesson books and color-code it. Amy shows the full step-by-step process for us to follow. Lastly, we will complete our chart by adding columns to help us remember different facts about each number squared. We are always free to decorate our main lesson book pages however we like.

Lesson Seven: Math: Long Division and Multiplication: Lesson A: Math and Multiplication

Next, we will learn the value of different kinds of coins and practice adding them to create larger dollar amounts. Lesson Sixteen: Math: Money: Lesson B: Adding and Subtracting Currency

Today we’re going to talk about how many coins of each kind it takes to make one dollar. We’ll look at quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, and we will create many combinations of these coins together to create that one dollar. Next, we will create a main lesson book page to remind us how many of each coin it takes to make a dollar. We will decorate our main lesson book page, then go through each kind of American coin and note how many of that one kind it would take to make one dollar. Lastly, we’ll do some addition and subtraction problems using decimals and money concepts.

Theme: Self and Others – Where Do I Belong? Cultivate Confidence and Security
By the third grade, children begin to understand the difference between self and other and wonder where they belong in the scheme of things. To fortify their growing personal identity, they read creation and origin stories (teacher can choose one or more from: Aboriginal, African, European, Asian, etc.)
Around the age of nine comes a very important psychological change. The child has a stronger sense of individuality or identity (ego) and therefore begins to question adult authority. It may feel isolated from family and friends and therefore need more sympathy and firmness from teachers and parents. Again, the subjects given to Class Three are carefully chosen and timed to relate to this inner psychological change.
The origin and creation stories give the nine-year-old an inner picture of the world’s vastness and the wonders it holds. In handwork, the children crochet a hat, a visible form of protection. In the main lesson, they learn about occupations such as house building, farming, and traditional crafts. How do farmers provide our food? Unforgettable is an early morning visit to a cowshed with its characteristic sounds and smells, seeing the cows milked, feeling their warm breath, tasting the fresh milk! Farming, housing, building, measurement, and mastery of the multiplication tables and four arithmetic processes provide a practical foundation for scientific study and help ground the children. They go away together to spend a week on a farm. The study of grammar helps them to develop rational thinking. Each child takes up a stringed instrument: violin, viola, or cello.

What are Living Lessons?
Students can use these full lessons by watching each video on their own. A Waldorf teacher can teach students using these Living Lessons. However, we also feel it is important that the parent/teacher remains involved in the lessons to stay true to the Waldorf methods. So Living Lessons can also serve as a classroom assistant and help you become a better teacher by having another teacher lead, guide, and inspire you. Either way you use them, your student will greatly benefit from these full lessons taught by a Waldorf teacher!
Here are some ways in which you may use the Living Lessons:
1. You are homeschooling multiple ages and need a virtual teacher now and then so you can offer each of your students individual attention.
2. You are looking for a virtual classroom experience with a Waldorf teacher.
3. You need a break now and then from homeschooling full time.
4. You want to enhance your own skill set by watching other teachers present Waldorf lessons.
5. You want to join a community of other parents experiencing Living Lessons with opportunities for your kids to connect with other kids in the program.
6. You are running a business or working from home and need a virtual teacher to help you homeschool.
7. You recently moved or are experiencing health challenges that make it hard to homeschool full time.
8. You are new to homeschooling and need a boost of confidence to start off your year.
9. You are new to Waldorf education.
10. You feel overwhelmed with the prospect of homeschooling, or you have been forced into homeschooling and are feeling lost.
