Can you really just look in the iris and tell what is wrong with a person?
Yes! You actually can.
The iris of the eye is comprised of many thousands of individual fibers, amongst which are located nerve endings linked directly to the brain. This enables the body to send information to the iris of the eye. It acts sort of like an informational daily print-out of what is going on in the body.
Although it was not “officially” a branch of medicine until the 1800s it has been used by farmers around the world as a diagnostic tool for their livestock since as far back as recorded history. As a tool for clinicians it was, of course, taught at Harvard Medical School until 1985. If you visit your doctor today, most of them will still check some of the basic signs of the iris and sclera.
