Sofi and I invested in some new colored pencils a couple weeks ago and decided to give pastel pencils a try. They took some time for Sofi to get used to, and the process is on-going but the results are amazingly satisfying. They are definitely worth the investment! I would recommend them for any child who is in fifth grade or older. Start them with simple pictures and shapes (form drawing) and move on to more complex ones. Once you gently draw the picture you can smudge it for a more seamless or dreamy effect – it is somewhere between a colored pencil drawing and a chalk drawing. Here is a sample from her mineralogy lesson from today. We drew agates with the colored pencils.
