Don’t Skimp on the Luxuries
Don’t be scared of luxuries. Saving money and being frugal is good but it doesn’t need to be at the expense of our health.
Even when I was broke with three small children I would find something luxurious to treat us with. Sometimes it was a free magician’s show at the library, spending the day at the nature center looking for frogs in the pond (luxuries of time), and sometimes it was making homemade ice cream (luxuries of food) or spending a few dollars on a new outfit that we didn’t really need at Goodwill (luxuries of money – purchasing things you don’t need for survival). Sometimes it was having a nail-painting session with one of my daughters (luxury of self-care).
As our budget expanded we had more choices but we always make sure to balance financial responsibilities with “treats” – feeling you deserve luxuries and providing yourself with those is one of the best things you can do for your emotional health.
At the same time keep your eye out for those that do not have any way of enjoying even the simplest luxuries of time, food, money or self-care. Perhaps you can help by offering to watch a child for a couple hours, dropping by a dish of homemade food, or offering to paint their nails.
