Tuesday Tip: Simple Solutions for Well-Being

For an introduction to my “Tuesday Tips and Thursday Thoughts” series please see the article “An Invitation to Embrace Your Journey and Follow Mine.”

These short thoughts/tips are meant to be a brief and efficient way to offer a quick touch of inspiration for the day.

Look for the simple solution first

We so often get caught up in thinking that solutions to our problems have to be complicated to work. This is frequently not the case. To show you how easy this trap is to fall into I’ll share a story from my life last month.

Keep in mind that I lecture on and focus on finding simple solutions in life. In fact I’m so “famous” for it that my kids joke, “if you break your arm mom will tell you to drink a glass of water.” But I still fell into the “complicated solution” trap.

A few weeks ago I noticed that I was not able to see the computer screen very well. My glasses were a couple years old and they were a bit scratched up anyway so I decided to get some new ones. I returned home with my new glasses, excited to have the problem solved, and still could not see the screen well. That’s when the obvious hit me over the head like a bag of rocks. It turns out the screen had been switched to the smallest font and was very dark. So I enlarged the font and brightened the screen. Problem solved.

I’ve seen so many other health problems solved by drinking more water, reducing caffeine consumption, turning off more lights to sleep at night, switching laundry detergent or bath soap, and even buying a different chair to sit in. In your quest for a healthier life always remember to look for the obvious and simple solution first. Your journey may already be hard. You don’t need to make it harder.
