365 Nature Walks: Day 104

#Earthschooling365: Day One Hundred and Four

Inner Work Meditation (Heart): For weeks the creek has fascinated me. It is only about ten feet from the trail we walk on yet since it is lined with trees and a drop-off nobody ever walks near the creek. This means that a lot of wildlife flourishes in and near the creek shore because of this privacy. So I made a plan – we would walk in the creek for our entire nature walk and would see amazing things we could not see from the land! We went to purchase knee-high waterproof boots, we purchased special socks to go with them and we chose a special time of day and the perfect “starting point” for our journey. But once we took our first step we realized three things – the creek bed was too muddy to walk very far in, the animals were scared away by the noise of us struggling in the water, and even the water photos were difficult to take because of the mud we stirred up. The plan failed. Or did it? In the end we laughed, we enjoyed what we saw, we got some great photos and we learned many things. Today’s inner work meditation is to think about something that went “wrong” last week and how you might have been able to adapt to turn it into something “right”. Use this knowledge moving forward.

Nature Walk Idea (Head): Today we walked in the creek in knee-high boots. I went last week to purchase boots at the farm store for $18.00 each especially for walks like this because we had grown out of all our other boots and the ones we did have were too short. It was a surprising experience. It was a lot harder to walk in the creek than we thought. We assumed we would walk along the creek for a few blocks. However, the bottom was so muddy we only made it a half a block before we were worn out. But we did see a different view of the world! Today’s nature walk project for you is to walk in some water during your walk. Walk on the shore of a lake, sea or ocean. Or walk in a creek. If you don’t have water around then take a short field trip to an area where there is some water. Take a water walk today!

Photography Notes (Hands): Sometimes you can get unusual photos simply by taking them in unusual places. Today all the photos we took were taken while we were walking in the creek. We walked through the muddy shallow creek in our knee-boots and along the way we saw floating leaves, water bugs, wood ducks and much more. Today’s photography assignment is for you to take photos while walking in the water. What challenges did you face? What kinds of unusual photos can you get?

Verse: Three
Copyright Kristie Burns

Three is the number
Of limbs on the tree
Whose motherly boughs
Are calling to me

Three is the seconds
It takes me to climb
Up the rough trunk
In the springtime

Three are the corners
Of the triangle formed
By the criss-cross of branches
The tree has transformed

I sit in the chair
Mother oak’s made for me
My eyes scan the horizon
To find groups of three

Maple leaf sections
A genie’s wish
Birds bent like a tripod
To hunt worms and fish

A trio of bunnies
Hopping across
A Y-shape (3) in the path
That is covered in moss

What can you see
Near or far
That counts as a three
Around where you are?
