#Earthschooling365: Day Thirty-Two

Inner Work Meditation (Heart): It is impossible for someone to walk into our lives without leaving footprints. We are often aware of these footprints but did you know that other people can see them too? Others can see the footprints left in your life by others by observing how you talk, walk, make decisions, and much more. Take some time today to think about what kinds of footprints are being left in your life. Are they the ones you want? Do you want footprints of wild dogs fighting, a raccoon peacefully washing his dinner by the river or a squirrel playing under a tree? What kind of footprints do you want in your life? How can you guide this to happen?
Nature Walk Idea (Head): Today your assignment is to find an animal sign. Depending on the time of day or how much noise you make, you may not see any animals on your nature walk. But that does not mean they are not there. Take some time on your walk today to find signs of animals in nature. These include footprints, pieces of fur, feathers, scratches or bites on trees, animal homes and more. Do you want to learn more about animal tracking? We have an amazing lesson block that we use for ages 5-9th grade created by professionals at: Tracking Lesson Block.
Photography Notes (Hands): Your assignment for today is to take take pictures of the animal signs you find. As I mentioned before not all photography is for an art gallery. Photography can serve many purposes. It is used by many people for many different reasons. It is used at social events to record important moments in family history like weddings, it is used in social media to share moments with friends and it can also be used to record scientific observations like animal tracks & signs. Be sure to take the photo in the proper manner. There are two ways to take photos of animals signs. Method one is to take the photos, as I did, for artistic reasons. Method two is scientific. To take a scientific photo of an animal track for identification or records you need to include a ruler in the photo as well as a card with the date, location and weather. You can keep some index cards and a pen with you for this reason. There are many cameras that do this for you in today’s world but I still use the index card method for one main reason – it makes it a lot easier to quickly sort the photos. If you depend on the camera to record the information then the information is contained in a file name or in a caption. If you have the information IN the photo itself it makes it much easier to refer back to later.
Verse: Nature’s Secret Code
Copyright Kristie Burns
Tip-toe, tramp and tread
They sneak about
While I’m in bed
Step, stretch and stroll
Who lives in
That deep dark hole?
A telltale sign
Stamped in mud or snow
Secret codes
That I will know
