#Earthschooling365: Day Thirty-Three

Inner Work Meditation (Heart): Shadows fall in different ways at different times of day in response to if, when and where the sun is in the sky. In the same way shadows in our spirit also respond to the sun. The more exposure to the sun we get, the happier we are. Take more notice of how you respond to the sun and let it guide you in knowing yourself better. Think about ways you can increase sun exposure in your life and those around you every day. Moving a desk or work area near a window, opening windows on a sunny day, taking a walk, sitting outdoors, and eating a meal or snack outdoors are some ideas. Other ideas can involve simulating the sun in your life in different ways. Did you know that rainbows (as chalk drawings, silks hung on the wall, paintings, or photos) can often cheer us up because they remind us of the full spectrum of colors in sunlight?
Nature Walk Idea (Head): Observe where shadows are this week as a discovery project. A discovery project is one where you will be discovering something that is already known. However, it is the process of this discovery that will engage the student and deepen their educational experience. All this week have your student(s) or yourself observe where their shadow falls from their body and also record two additional pieces of data – where the sun is in the sky and the time of day. You can adapt this assignment to make it easier or harder depending on the age of the student. Are they stepping on all of it? Is it in front of them? Behind them? Is it long or short? At the end of the week discuss what you have learned from this data. We have more nature walk ideas in our curriculum packages (pre-G8) including our April Preschool, Kindergarten or First Grade Curriculum
Photography Notes (Hands): Your assignment for today is to take pictures featuring shadows. Shadows are so much fun to play with in photography. If I were to share all of my favorite shadow photos it would take up pages. So I am sharing only a few photos from today’s walk. You will notice all these photos, as well as some past and future photos in this series include shadows as an important part of the image.
Verse: Ice is Winter Moss
Copyright Kristie Burns
Shadows slinking slowly
Across the icy creek
Did their mother also tell them
To be cautious as they cross?
Or are their toes simply frosty
When they touch the winter moss?
