#Earthschooling365: Day Seventy-Two
Inner Work Meditation (Heart): Today we will start taking a journey through the 12-senses. There are many philosophers and teachers who have expanded upon the concept of the five basic senses. Our journey the next twelve days will be based on the speeches of Rudolf Steiner. Rudolf Steiner identified 12 senses – seven more than the normal five most people recognize – which he placed into three groups: Touch, Life, Self-Movement, Balance, Smell, Taste, Sight, Temperature/Warmth, Hearing, Language, Concept, Ego.
Senses of Knowledge – ego, thought, word, hearing
Senses of Feeling – warmth, sight, taste, smell
Senses of Ego – Balance, movement, life, touch
Over the next twelve days I will share a little information about each of these senses and help you understand how you can nurture each sense and recognize what the benefits of this will be. I will also talk a bit about how an imbalance or lack of knowledge about the senses can cause health, emotional, spiritual, learning and other problems. Today, your inner work assignment is to open your mind to going beyond your five basic senses and take some time to think about what each of these twelve categories means to you.
Nature Walk Idea (Head): Do you notice anything different about this deer? Anything unusual? Look at her ears, her legs and her face then look at her body. Doesn’t she look much larger than the other photos I’ve shared of deer? That is because she is! Exciting news! She is expecting a baby and it will be born soon. She may even have twins or triplets! Deer actually give us a lot of navigation signs in nature. The shape of a doe can tell you what month it is, how large the antlers are on a buck can tell you the season and deer can even show you the safest path to take in the woods. Deer create natural pathways through the forests and parks. If you have deer in your area look for the natural pathways they create and try to follow them. If you are deep in the woods finding a deer path can lead you to important areas you may need. Deer often like to graze on the edge of the woods so one of their paths could lead you out of the woods. Deer also need to create paths to a water source so if you are looking for a creek or stream they can lead the way. Today’s nature walk project is to find a deer path and follow it or find another animal path and follow it.
Photography Notes (Hands): We’ve talked about leading the viewer through the photo using leading lines, half circles and circles. Today we will talk about S-curves. S-curves can have a hypnotic effect on the viewer as their eyes follow the curve through the frame. S-curves can be an actual shape of an S formed by a tree, path, river, winding road, building, person, snake or other subject. However, they can also be implied as in the photo above. S-curves can also create a sense of depth in a photo as the eye moves from foreground to background. Today’s assignment is to take some photos using S-curves in nature.

I smell like the moss on the forest floor
I sound like the swish of slow-closing-door
I feel like the fray on a ball of rope
If you lick me I taste like a bar of soap
I look like a curious wide-eyed child
I’ll give you a hint – I live in the wild
What am I?
Answer: Deer
