#Earthschooling365: Day Seventy-Seven
Inner Work Meditation (Heart): Today we will explore the third of our twelve senses – the sense of speech. Yesterday we talked about the sense of thought – one’s ability to understand others when they communicate through speech. Today we will talk about a related but different sense. The sense of speech goes beyond the ability to hear and understand others. The sense of speech enables us to also find meaning behind the expressions of others. This sense of speech is often common within a species of mammal or common within a culture. A good example of how we use the “sense of speech” is how babies and toddlers understand what we are expressing even when they do not understand the language. Or how dogs understand a lot of what we are saying without knowing how to speak. They perceive these things by means of gestures, tone, facial cues and more. Take some time today to think about ways in which you can expand your sense of speech. Learning another language (languages of different animals and cultures) is one way to develop your sense of speech. Meditate on how you can spend more time today listening to the heart of what is being said rather than just the words. How would you describe your “sense of speech” today? Check back in a few months and see if this description has changed.

Nature Walk Idea (Head): Taking close up photos of leaves and flowers always leaves me amazed at how many different colors of green, purple, pink, red, yellow, blue and orange (among others) exist in the botanical world. On your nature walk today try to find as many different colors as you can in leaves and flowers. To make the task more challenging you can focus on one color per day all week and perhaps even bring a journal with colored pencils along with you to record what you see. My favorite category of color to start with is green. Try to find the following shades of green on your walk: Artichoke Green, Asparagus Green, Avocado Green, Dark Green, Fern Green, Forest Green, Jungle Green, Laurel Green, Light Green, Mantis Green, Moss Green, Myrtle Green, Mint Green, Pine Green, Shamrock Green, Tea Green, Teal, Olive Green, and Sea Green.
Photography Notes (Hands): Today’s assignment is to take as many close ups photos of leaves and flowers as you can. Some of my favorite ways to bring flowers and leaves alive are to take photos of them with dew-drops or rain-drops, to use a small aperture and low depth of field, to highlight an unusual part of the plant, to contrast bright colors against earthy colors, using back-lighting to highlight leaf patterns and to isolate details. What are some other techniques we can been learning that could help you take amazing photos of leaves and flowers? After taking your photos today, choose your three favorite photos and make a list of the techniques you used in these photos that made them your favorites. List old and new techniques.
