365 Nature Walks: Day 86

#Earthschooling365: Day Eighty-Six

Inner Work Meditation (Heart): Today we will explore another one of our twelve senses – the sense of movement. A person is always experiencing movement in some way even if it is small. Every few seconds your eyes blink. This is a small movement. When you pour a cup of tea this is a bit larger of  movement. And when you jump or dance this is an even larger movement. Even the ongoing  journey we are making from birth to death is a sort of movement.

Do you ever feel “cabin fever” from not being able to move as much in the winter? Do you ever find it challenging to sit through an entire hour-long speech? Do you find yourself wanting to move after sitting for a long period of time? What is it that is giving you these messages? It is your sense of movement. If a person’s sense of movement is ignored anxiety and/or depression can result. Physical ailments such as restless leg syndrome can also come about from ignoring one’s sense of movement. Today’s inner work assignment is to get in touch with your sense of movement or a child or companion’s movement needs. In today’s society children are often overwhelmed with movement when they are taken from activity to activity every day. A typical child may have ballet, soccer, and swim lessons in just one day. On the other hand, many adults in today’s society are suffering from lack of movement due to jobs that keep them at desks for long hours. Do you need to move more or less? What about the people (adults or children) you know or work with daily?

May 25AXNature Walk Idea (Head): Today’s assignment is to observe how nature interacts with man-made objects. In the photo to the right you can see a crow sitting on a light post. Do you think the crow sees this as a light post? Of course not. He sees this as a perch for a crow. During your walk today observe animals, birds or insects interacting with man-made objects and come up with different (and perhaps silly) names for those objects. For example we can re-name this post, “Crow-perch” instead of a “lamp-post”. We can even add our own crow-inspired definition for this new word saying that crow-perch means an  “individual crow perch for times when a crow wants to be alone”. How many items can you re-name today?

Photography Notes (Hands): Today’s assignment is to focus on how you can use matching colors to add illusion to your photos. In the photo of the crow on the lamp post it almost appears that the crow is a figure on top of the post because his color is so similar to that of the post. In this case the color black is the focus of the photo and adds interest. What colors can you find around you today that match? What optical illusions can you create from the things you see around you today?

Verse: The Crow and the Lamp Post
Copyright Kristie Burns

There once was a crow on a post
Who’s light perch made him boast
But the bulb switched on
His fate was forgone
He fried like a dark piece of toast

**Limmerick: A fixed light verses form of five generally anapestic lines rhyming AABBA. A metrical foot consisting of two unaccented syllables followed by an accented syllable.

*These poems have been created for many purposes – from early childhood circle time verses to inspirational or expressive. They vary from day to day so you may find the way you use them or enjoy them also varies. If you would like to set these poems to music consider our tutorial: Creating Your Ow Waldorf Verses or Finding Your Inner Voice.

What is #Earthschooling365?

This series takes you through an entire year of our nature walks and is part of our non-profit project #Earthschooling365 at www.Earthschooling.org. The photos and posts in this series are all copyrighted. Please do not share or re-print them. Instead, share the link to this blog with your friends.

Along the way I will be sharing our favorite photo of the day, an inner work meditation for the day, photography assignment/tip for the day, nature walk theme for the day and a short verse for circle time (children) or meditation (teens/adults). We invite you to “walk along with us” this year, take some time to use the inner work meditation, be inspired by the nature walk theme of the day and perhaps even start a photo series of your own. To join the community on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram please tag your photos #Earthschooling365. To receive these inspirations in your e-mail inbox daily please subscribe to our blog alerts HERE. Don’t worry about missing days – you can join us as many days as you want this year!

Every day we will post one day. We will leave up 2 weeks of nature walks at a time. At the end of two weeks each nature walk will be transferred to the Lifetime Member’s Only Blog and will be accessible only to Lifetime Earthschooling Members.
