#Earthschooling365: Day Eighty-Nine
Inner Work Meditation (Heart): Today as I was on our nature walk I noticed a deer crossing the creek and her reflection in the water. Her reflection fell just perfectly into the creek below. It was so magical I stopped and enjoyed the moment (and of course took a couple photos, too). I took note “for future reference” that is was right before sunset and that this was a good time to catch reflections in the creek. If I had walked over the bridge in the afternoon or when the sun was coming from a different direction I would not have seen the same image. Have you ever noticed that our own reflections are just as elusive? Sometimes (and with some people) we can clearly see what we are doing and other times (or with other people) we have a muddled view of ourselves or we can’t see our “reflection” at all. Today’s inner work is to observe what is reflected back to you today depending on the time of day or the person you are with. To prepare for this observation practice today take some time to think about your experiences yesterday and reflect on the same observations.
Nature Walk Idea (Head): Today on our nature walk we will play a game with primary colors. In the photo of the cardinal red is a primary color but green is not. So in that photo there is one primary color and one color that was “mixed” from blue and yellow (to make green). On your nature walk today try to find as many of the primary colors as you can. For older children you can increase the challenge by asking them what colors they would need to mix to make the non-primary color they see. For children in 7th through 12th grade (or adults) you can increase the challenge by asking them to be even more specific. For example – how much blue and yellow would you need to mix to make the specific color of green in the cardinal photo above? What would you need to mix to make the browns or light green of the creek above?
Photography Notes (Hands): Today we are going to talk again about alternate tripod techniques and practice another technique. The “tripod” I used to take the photo of the deer with the reflection today was a bridge. I set the camera on the bridge to steady it and took the picture. This allowed me to take the picture I wanted without having to use a small aperture or a high ISO (film speed – we leaned about this in the first month of lessons). Today your assignment is to use a man-made object as an “alternate tripod”. What things can you find that will work well? I use a lot of bridges on my nature walk. I’ve also used cars, garbage cans, brick walls and benches.
Verse: Riddle Poem
Copyright Kristie Burns
In sunglasses I am mysterious
On the sidewalk I disappear
In the river I am delirious
On your drinking glass too near
In a spoon I make funny faces
On a fork I am split into four
I hide in unexpected places
But rarely on the floor
What am I?
Answer: Your reflection
