#Earthschooling365: Day Ninety-Two
Inner Work Meditation (Heart): If you look at the photo to the left of the tiny bug on the log and the photos of fungi at the very bottom of this post and the photo of the fly on the mushroom you will see that there is a tiny world that exists on these logs. It is not something one would notice if they are running by or paying attention to the “larger” world, but for those little bugs, that fly and that fungi – it is their entire world. That little red bug may spend his entire life on that log. If that log were to get crushed by a bulldozer or fall apart or burn up he would be without a home. Logs don’t really seem that significant to us but they are very significant to the little red bug, fly and fungi. In the same way there are often many other things that don’t seem significant to us but are very significant to other living beings (animals, birds, insects, people). Take some time today to mediate on something that is important in someone else’s life – put yourself in someone else’s shoes today and try to understand something that is important to them.
Nature Walk Idea (Head): Today we saw a young buck on our nature walk. I love the bucks in the spring and summer because their antlers are so soft and fuzzy with velvet. Then, in autumn and winter they rub off the velvet and in the process their antlers become very prickly and dangerous. There are so many things in nature that have softness balanced with sharpness. How many things can you find today on your nature walk that have this balance? Some that I see every day are – soft nettle leaves that have sharp needles that will stick in your skin (under the fur), soft thistle flowers that have sharp leaves, soft roses that have sharp thorns and fluffy bees that have sharp stingers. Can you find these soft-sharp things and or/others on your nature walk today?
Photography Notes (Hands): Today I took many pictures that featured bark. The sharp and defined texture in the bark was a nice contrast to the fluffiness of the squirrel and the squishiness of the mushrooms. Your assignment today is to find a subject that shows these same soft-sharp contrasts. You can even use your nature walk assignment to provide ideas for your photographs today by taking photos of rose bushes, thistles, bees or other subjects that feature the contrasts of soft and sharp.

There was a red bug on a log
Who ate gnats all day like a hog
He never left home
And lived all alone
Until he was slurped by a frog
