Thursday Thoughts: Identify Your Motivations for Eating and Increase Your Well-Being

For an introduction to my “Tuesday Tips and Thursday Thoughts” series please see the article “An Invitation to Embrace Your Journey and Follow Mine.”

These short thoughts/tips are meant to be a brief and efficient way to offer a quick touch of inspiration for the day.

Identify Your Motivations for Eating and Increase Your Well-Being

Identify your motivations for eating. By doing this you can make them sync more with health rather than temporary gratification, bandaids or emotional eating.

Some reasons I felt like eating/drinking in the past week were:

1. Coffee to stay awake
2.Eating because I was in physical pain (my toothache)

3. Eating because I was frustrated while waiting for a file to upload on the computer.

But each time I ask myself, “Am I really hungry? How will I feel in ten minutes? Is this really a good long term choice?”

Sometimes just simply waiting ten minutes, drinking a glass of water, distracting yourself or walking around for five minutes can take care of the issue.

They key is awareness – be aware of WHY you are eating. But don’t discard all non-logical reasons. We are not (Star Trek) Vulcans! Emotional eating can be healthy with awareness. In this photo I was sharing an almond milk latte with my daughter. The sense of connecting with her and enjoying the coffee together was much stronger than my need for coffee in this moment.
